Observation

I have just realized that I don't have any friends who are Democrats.

Am I alone in this?

No friends I've meet in person, but a couple online. But I do have a few family members I suspect as being a little on the Left.

No I do not make friends with people who say they are demorats. I even ask when starting to get to know someone. I want to know where they are comming from so I ask. I do have relatives by marrage who are Demorats. You however cannot allways pick your relatives but you CAN pick your friends. I do not get along with those relatives at all. I dislike them and they know it. As often as I see them.

I've got a number of friends who are Democrats. Most of them have learned by now to avoid any political subjects with me -- put very simply, I study the issues, come armed to a debate with facts, and don't back down or just politely "agree to disagree" when they make outrageous claims like "Gitmo violates the Geneva Conventions!"

Most of my Democrat friends are not especially serious about politics. They'll make broad, sweeping comments like the above, but very quickly admit they haven't really studied the issues when backed into a corner. (And of course they haven't -- if they had, they wouldn't be spouting ridiculous talking points.) What I find truly amazing, though, is that they can walk away from a conversation like that having been corrected on *every* "fact" they brought up, and STILL think that they'd win the argument if they just "studied a little more."

*shakes head in amazement*

In all seriousness, though, branch out -- for most of my lefty friends, I'm the ONLY right-winger they know, which explains why a lot of their ideas are just dogmatically held beliefs. They're preaching to the choir, and the choir's preaching back. Feedback loops like that are dangerous in any kind of ideological argument, but never more so than when we have such dramatic political polarization as today.

Don't fall into the same trap.

I have had friends who are Democrats, but eventually, their blatant disregard for human life got in the way of Friday girls' night. My family is Iraqi and suffered under Saddam Hussein, and yet one of my Leftist friends had the guts to tell me that my family was only a "few people" and did not represent the "big picture" and that the Iraq war was wrong. Needless to say, we don't keep in touch.

Thing is, I've tried being friends with Lefties. They are either:

1. Smelly
2. Stupid
3. Rude
4. High
5. All of the above.

Doesn't really sit well with me.
